It became an annual autumn tradition under Tom Thibodeau.
The Knicks, the former coach often said, had to try more 3-point shots than the previous season.
A goal was to have an average of 40.
But that never happened, and last year the Knicks only tried 34.1 per match, the fourth least in the competition, and only 31.7 triples per in the late season.
Thibodeau’s replacement, Mike Brown, wants to see that change.
“I mean, when we get 40, I am cool with it,” he said on Friday after the team’s last training before I went abroad to Abu Dhabi to play two exhibition matches against the 76 people. “If we get 40-plus, I am cool with it, but they must be good 3s.”
That is of course required.
It was also a Thibodeau discussion point.
Brown does not only want the Knicks to take a high volume of 3-Pointers to increase their average.
It must be in the current of the attack. It should not be a ball movement. They must be open, quality looks.
“We have a few guys we allow to dance with it and let it go, and they know who they are, but if we play as we are in pace, especially distance, and the paint racks must generate a lot of catch-and-Schoot 3s,” said the new coach of the Knicks. “If you are open and your feet are set, especially if that ball touches the paint or we have a cut or roll and it draws the defense and now we get a spray to a 3, we can let it fly better. We can let it fly better.”
In Sacramento Under Brown, the Kings Seventh (37.3) were in the competition in 3-point attempts in 2022-23 and third (39.3) the following season.
Most 3s trying the Knicks, while Thibodeau was that the coach was 36.9 in 2021-22.
There are a few extra factors that work to their advantage in terms of increasing their 3-point volume.
Firstly, the plan under Brown is to play faster and to generate more assets.
The Knicks were in the competition in the competition a year ago.
Another is that they have more 3-point options after adding Jordan Clarkson, Guerschon Yabusele and Malcolm Brogdon.
The Knicks, that should be noted, shot 36.9 percent remotely last year as a team, which was the eighth best figure in the competition.
Keerders Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, Miles McBride and Landry Shamet shot it all at a clip of 36.9 percent or better.
The only two non-shooters in the projected rotation are Mitchell Robinson and Josh Hart, and even Hart can occasionally make 3s.
The pieces are in place to be a strong 3-point shooting team.
It can just take time, since this group learns a new offensive system.
During the first week of the training camp, Brown emphasized the need to generate good shots, not necessarily 3S.
“We still try to understand concepts, understand where we should be on the ground, our pace, distance and things like that,” said Brunson. “Once I think once understands and once we know where everyone will be, whether we play for ourselves or for others, that will be a lot easier.”
