McGree, 27, left at Ashton Gate. He will now have to be assessed in the coming days.

In this latest update on his condition, Hellberg said, according to a report from TeesideLive: “I don’t really know yet. I don’t think it’s that dangerous, but I don’t have a good answer for you yet. We’ll see.”

“I just spoke to him at half-time and hopefully it’s not too serious. Riley is an incredible player for us. It’s a big blow but we have such a big squad and a lot of good players.”

“So we’ll just carry on and hopefully he’ll be back soon. He didn’t think it was that important at half-time. He’s a good person and a player we need in the team.”

Middlesbrough remain second in the table after their impressive season so far. They are six points behind Coventry City at the top and five points behind Ipswich Town and Hull City.

Middlesbrough will be keeping their fingers crossed for McGree. Boro will miss his influence in the middle of the park if he is on the sidelines.

The Australian international, who has 31 caps to his name, injects quality into Hellberg’s starting eleven. He is competing with the likes of Hayden Hackney, Aidan Morris and Alan Browne for a place in the team.

McGree made the switch to the Riverside Stadium in 2022 and has since proven to be a useful player to fall back on. That’s him contract until June 2028 meaning he still has a few years to complete his deal.

The former Adelaide United and Club Brugge man left Birmingham City to join his current club. Since then he has made 110 appearances in all competitions, scoring 17 goals and 12 assists.

What next for Middlesbrough?

Middlesbrough will check on McGree after their loss at Bristol City. Boro will be disappointed that they couldn’t get anything out of the game against the Robins.

They have a chance to bounce back on Boxing Day. Next up is a home game against Blackburn Rovers.

Hellberg has made a positive impression since moving last month. He won four of his first five matches.

The 37-year-old was picked as a replacement for Rob Edwards, who quit for Premier League strugglers Wolves. He left Hammarby IF in the Allsvenskan and has since adapted well to life in England.

Middlesbrough have the opportunity to bring in a number of new faces in the upcoming January transfer window. They will also have the option this winter to let some players out the exit door if necessary to free up space and money.

Hellberg will want to put his own stamp on his newly inherited team with some reinforcements. The club will likely be working hard behind the scenes to identify potential targets to move to.
