Michael Morales is not happy with Ian Machado Garry’s recent comments about who the next opponent should be in the UFC welterweight division.
For context, “The Future” suggested three potential matchups for the 170-pound division in a recent Instagram video. The Irishman wants Morales to take on Carlos Prates and Jack Della Maddalena to fight Kamaru Usman, while he wants to fight champion Islam Makhachev.
About Morales, Garry said:
“Carlos Prates vs. Michael Morales because they are two powerful, heavy hitters, and I want to see who comes out on top. I doubt Morales would accept it, because the truth is that Carlos Prates hits harder.”
He also called himself the “number one contender in the world” while suggesting a fight with Islam Makhachev.
“The welterweight world title fight. I want to see the champion, Islam Makhachev, defend his title against the number one contender in the world, Ian Machado Garry. I’m next.”

Morales last fought against Sean Brady at UFC 322 and secured a Round 1 TKO victory. He has stopped in the first round in his last three matches and boasts a pro-MMA record of 19-0.
Morales and Islam Makhachev are reportedly set to face each other in January. However, the matchup never materialized as both fighters did not want to return too early in the year, having last competed at UFC 322 in November 2025.

Ian Machado Garry’s head coach, Diego Lima, believes his student should be next in line to challenge UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev.
Lima says ‘The Future’ “has all the characteristics and requirements” to fight Makhachev. He also believed that a fight between Garry and the pound-for-pound king would be one in which strategic intelligence would ultimately determine the outcome. He told MMA Fighting:
I believe the fight for the title is hands down Ian Garry. For everything. For what he’s been shown, who he’s met, how he’s confronted them, the short notice he’s accepted fights, the intelligence he’s shown and the fact that he sells. He sells a lot. I believe he has all the characteristics and requirements to take on Islam Makhachev for the 170 welterweight title.”
He added:
“I believe in a fight [between Makhachev and] Ian would be incredible, a really good one. A fight where strategic intelligence would deliver the result.”
