Lowell, Ma -Michael “The Blessed Southpaw” Fontanez (12-0-1, 8 Kos) headed a CES box event for the first time on Saturday evening and waged war with the Venezuelan knockout artist Esneiker “La Maravilla” Correa (16-6-2, 14 Kos) in an active midweight. The fight held in the historic Lowell Memorial Auditorium and broadcast live Swerve Combat TVended in a majority of drawing after eight exciting rounds.
Both hunters were not strangers for the location, who had fought there only 11 weeks earlier. Fontanez put Noah Kidd in four rounds in June, while Correa Francis Hogan almost shocked before he was put in the fourth. On this night they gave fans an 8-round war that started as a tactical chess match and turned into a Slugfest.
Fontanez, 29, used his sharp puncture and crispy left to dominate the early rounds, but the tide shifted in the fifth when a cut opened over his left eye. Correa seized the moment, explained ruthless pressure with explosive combinations and checked various late rounds. Despite the blood that flowed out of his cut, Fontanez bit his mouthpiece and actually opposed the piece.
When the dust settled, the jury members returned a majority of trek: 76-76 (twice) and 77-75 for Fontanez-a decision that fans buzzed and called for a rematch.
