Manchester United recorded a late victory over Everton to consolidate their place in the top four of the Premier League.
Tough victory
It wasn’t exactly a hair-raising performance, but they passed a tough exam on a wet and windy Monday night at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Their 1-0 win was full of grit and determination and marked their fifth win in six games under interim manager Michael Carrick.
Speak with Air sports after the match Carrick gave his opinion on the match.
He admitted that it was not his team’s best game, but emphasized that the win and the three points were crucial. Carrick explained: “There are games where you have to show a different side of your team. We had four wins in a row with some really good performances, and I actually expected there would be a period where we would have to dig in a little more and get results.”
He continued: “We did that to a certain extent at West Ham, and we had to do it again today. The spirit, the sacrifice, the willingness to work for each other – especially the way we defended our box towards the end – everyone played their part. To come away with the clean sheet is fantastic, and it’s a great win for us.”
Tough place to get to
Carrick was asked to comment on whether the fact that United had not played for 13 days had made them a little rusty, but he focused more on how difficult it is to visit Everton.
He claimed: “It wasn’t easy for us tonight. It’s always hard to get here. I’ve been coming to Everton for a long time and it’s never an easy game. I can’t remember a game here where everything clicked.”
Carrick admitted it has been a struggle and a struggle, but said sometimes these are the best victories for a coach.
Quality in attack
United spent big this summer signing Brazilian Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, and they all contributed to the goal.
Carrick, who ran through Sesko’s winner, added: “Yes, it was a great move. We know we are capable of that. We have players who can produce moments like that. If we defend well as a team and do our best, we always feel like we have a chance.”
He added: “Matheus defended well and started the transition, Bryan picked a great pass and Ben completed it confidently and powerfully. I loved the finish. I’m really happy for him – he has impressed again and continues to do so.”
Sesko form
Despite scoring three crucial goals in his last four games, Sesko was left on the bench by Carrick.
The England manager showed his support for the Slovenian and hinted from the start that he would soon get his chance.
He explained: “Ben is in a really good place at the moment. We’ve had some good conversations. Patience is important to him; it helps him grow here and develop as a player. He understands that.”
Carrick concluded by explaining: “I’m sure he will be a big player for us for a long time. We have to manage that properly. We have some very good attackers, and he made a big difference when he arrived. Selection decisions are something we will take into account as we move forward, but the balance of our forward play has been good.”
