UFC commentator and former middleweight champion Michael Bisping has given his thoughts on the current status of the promotion and the champions sitting at the top.
As we know, Michael Bisping is one of the most beloved veterans in the history of mixed martial arts. He has given a lot to the sport over the course of his career and even now, many years after his retirement, he still lends his voice to the action, both in his commentary and in his analyst work.
There has been quite a bit of turnover lately when it comes to championship holders in the UFC. In addition, we have also seen the resurgence of fighters pushing for a second world title in a second weight class, rather than defending their own turf.
In one recent video on his channel, Michael Bisping explained why he is not a fan of this strategy.
Michael Bisping questions the current UFC champions
“If you listen to all the noise, everyone is running from everyone. We have Ilia who is apparently running from Arman Tsarukyan. We have Islam Makhachev who is running from Ilia Topuria. We have Khamzat Chimaev who is running from Nassourdine Imavov. We have Alex Pereira who is running from Khamzat Chimaev. And we have Jon Jonesthe greatest of all time, on the run from the great Tom Aspinall. That’s the situation if you just listen to what everyone says online.”
“I’ve said it many times, you really have to defend the title in your weight class three times before you even think about moving on, or you have to leave the belt. Give it up, keep the division moving and then you move up, maybe you deserve a shot, maybe you get an instant title fight if your star is big enough. But this whole thing of winning the title and wanting to jump ship right away is getting out of hand. What Pereira has done is phenomenal, and if anyone has earned the right to pursue history, He is, but the general principle must still apply.”
“Everyone runs from everyone else if you believe what you read, and that’s why I had to talk about it.”
