Mets’ pursuit of Bo Bichette and Alex Bregman faces one major obstacle

The New York Mets’ offseason has tested fans’ patience and faith in baseball executive David Stearns.

Losing two homegrown talents and fan favorites like Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil was a tough pill to swallow, and the front office will have to do a lot of work to turn the story around. Of course, money shouldn’t be an issue for Steve Cohen, but with the way this team is operating now, it looks like it’s ready to move away from the big-spending approach.

While the Mets are reportedly still in the mix to land both Bo Bichette and Alex Bregman, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic just doesn’t see that happening right now.

The Mets’ plans may not match the demands of their targets

“The Mets are interested in adding a right-handed hitter to balance their lineup,” Rosenthal said wrote. “They’re more likely to find that player in a trade than in free agency. Alex Bregman and Bo Bichette are the best right-handed batting free agents, but will likely have more years of command than the Mets are willing to tolerate.”

Bichette, who recently expressed his willingness to move to second base after overshooting there during the World Series, is reportedly looking to get about five years and something between $130 million and $150 million.

Bregman, on the other hand, has reportedly drawn interest from the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks, so the Mets would have to go through a major bidding war to acquire his services.

It’s too early in this new era of Mets baseball to jump to conclusions. That being said, this new approach looks a lot more like a rebuild than the front office would like to admit.
