The New York Mets seemed to be on the road to achieve a much needed victory through the third inning of Wednesday evening’s game when they enjoyed a 6-0 lead on the Atlanta Braves.
After a disastrous fourth inning in which the Mets surrendered nine points, the attack completely collapsed and New York lost its 12th game in 14 attempts in a loss of 11-6 for 38,647 fans on Citi Field.
After the game Mets manager Carlos Mendoza reporters said that he did not think that the loss of Wednesday evening was the worst of the season, but said it “sucks” to blow a lead as they had early in the game.
“We have had some difficult, but I wouldn’t say the worst loss of the season,” Mendoza saidVia the Mets. “They all count the same, but it is crazy to lose a game when you are six right away.”
The Mets scored three points in each of the first two innings. START-WERRER David Peterson allowed six earned points in the fourth inning before he was drawn for right-handed Reliever Garrett. Garrett allowed three earned points before he came out of the disastrous inning.
Mendoza then used Paul Blackburn to complete the game, not even noticed when the right -handed Reliever surrendered two runs in the sixth inning.
At that moment, Mendoza said he was busy saving the bullpen for another day. Mendoza’s admission was strange because he seemed to punder on the chances of the Mets for a comeback with three more chances on the plate. He does not trust his attack and he does not believe in his rotation.
Mendoza said the coaching staff will try to find out how they can get more out of the talent that the Mets played quality baseball in the first half of the season.
“They are heavy losses, but we have to continue,” said Mendoza. “We now have coaches who look at almost everything trying to find out how we can continue to help these guys, especially the guys from the rotation because we know the talent is there. But we just couldn’t get much of it, especially the last time.”
Forget the NL East, where they follow the Philadelphia Phillies with five games; The Mets hardly try to hold a wildcard spot. They have a lead of one game on the Cincinnati Reds.
