The New York Mets announced that Frankie Montas was placed on the 15-day wounded list (with retroactive effect until August 22) because of a UCL-related injury in his right elbow. Right-handed Huascar Brazoban has been called from Triple-A to take the place of Montas on the active schedule.
Manager Carlos Mendoza said reporters that the UCL injury of Montas is ‘pretty important’, via Mike Puma of the New York Post. Mendoza also confirmed that Montas will no longer pitch in 2025.
It is the newest setback in what was a cheeky inaugural season for Montas in Queens. The right -handed signed a guarantee of $ 34 million with the Mets in the winter, but has so far only produced 38 2/3 innings work for the team. A Lat -Stame suffered at the start of spring training, Montas left to open the season on the injured list and he made his debut debut only June 24.
After throwing five scoreless innings in its first start of the year, Montas threw to a horrible 7.85 ERA during its next six starts with a strikeout percentage of 18.2% and no less than seven home runs allowed. Those brutal results brought the Mets to Move Montas to the Bullpen Earlier this month, where he surrendered four points (two earned) on four walks and six hits (including a home run) while he only hit three.

In total, Montas posted an ERA of 6.28 and a FIP of 5.31 during its time with the Mets with a strike output of 18.0% and a running speed of 7.9%. It is a deep disappointing result, and now it is an open question when Montas will then be available to pitch. The METS did not make any announcements about the timeline of the Rechtsrener for return, nor offered to indications about the severity of the injury. Of course, many fans will wonder about the possibility of Tommy John Surgery, who is often necessary to repair the UCL from a pitcher as soon as damaged. Such a procedure (or even a less invasive internal brace procedure) would probably not only cost Montas the rest of this year, but also the entire season 2026. That said, some UCL injuries are possible to tackle through rehabilitation. That is a path that Braves Hurler Grant Holmes has chosen to take earlier this month while dealing with a partial UCL -TRAAN, although even the rehabilitation process of Holmes has brought his campaign from 2025 an abrupt end.
Although the details of the prognosis and the timeline of Montas are not clear before the return until the Mets make an announcement that offer more information, the club will be for the direct future without the right side. Given that the performance of Montas was bad enough that he was bumped from the rotation earlier this month, that might not be so huge. Sean Manaea, Kodai Senga, David Peterson and Clay Holmes remain in the rotation of the club and are recently accompanied by top perspective Nolan McLean. Brandon Waddell and Justin Hagenman are already in the minors on the 40-man roster as potential depth options behind that group, and a well-claimed Prospect Brandon Sproat has a 4.24 ERA in 24 Starts at Triple-A this year.
Replacing Montas on the Roster is Brazoban, who started his career in the Majors with Miami in 2022, but this year served as one up and down auxiliary for the Mets. It is a role in which he spoke quite well, with an ERA of 3.83 and 4.14 FIP over 51 2/3 Innings work spread between 3 Starts and 41 relief outings. Brazoban is intended to record the mantle of Montas as the long reliever of the club in the future.
