Chicago – Jose Siri’s term of office at the Mets as an active player was short and disappointing.
The 30-year-old Outfielder, who arrived last winter with the expectation that he would be part of a task share in midfield, was designated for assignment on Wednesday when the club created schedule space for the return of Tyrone Taylor from the injured list.
Taylor stood in the starting setup against the Cubs on Wigley Field.
Siri owned a .292 Ops in 16 games for the Mets. He spent most of the season with the rehabilitation of a broken left shin that he maintained in April when polluting a ball of his shin.
Siri, known during his career for his defense, heard angry in Citi Field last week after the wrong play of two balls in midfield. He attacked 2-out-32 (.067) for the team with 17 strikeouts.
“It was about to activate a right -handed batter who plays pretty good defense and offers versatility and speed,” said Carlos Mendoza, referring to Taylor.
Mendoza indicated that Taylor, Cedric Mullins and Brandon Nimmo are all opportunities for midfield. Nimmo started his first game of the season in the middle on Tuesday.
Kodai Senga will remain in Port St. Lucie, Fla., After his live Batting -Eurs session earlier this week. Mendoza gave a lukewarm review of the Senga outing and said that the right -handed “just ok” was.
The most striking was that the speed of Senga was 93 km / h – a sign or two of where it is normal.
“It was hot and he felt it again,” said Mendoza. “That was a part of the report we received from the pitching coaches, that it came a bit with him again and he got tired.”
Senga threw mixed results in two starts for Triple-A Syracuse after agreing to a relegation, allowing him to work on his engineers.
“He will continue to throw,” said Mendoza. “He will continue to throw and then we will see where we are.”
Brandon Sproat starts the series opener on Friday in Miami, according to Mendoza. The manager refused to officially call a starter on Saturday – Clay Holmes and Sean Manaaea seem to be the primary candidates.
