Meta absolutely offers a substantial payment packages of millions of dollars to AI researchers when chasing its new Superintelligence Lab. But nobody really gets a ‘signed bonus’ of $ 100 million, according to a poached researcher and comments from a leaked internal meeting.
During a company-wide all-hand meeting on Thursday leaked at the edgeSome of Meta’s top managers were asked about the bonuses that Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAi, said that Meta had offered top researchers.
CTO Andrew Bosworth from Meta implied that only a few people could have offered that type of money for very senior leadership roles, but clarified “the actual conditions of the offer” was not “registration bonus. They are all these different things.” In other words, no direct piece of money. Technology companies generally offer the largest chunks of their wages to senior leaders in limited stock unit (RSU) fairs, depending on the term of office or performance tricks.
A total payment package of four years worth around $ 100 million for a very senior leader is not unthinkable for Meta. Most of it Meta’s officers mentionedIncluding Boswell, have earned between $ 20 million and almost $ 24 million a year for years.
Altman suggested that we do this for every person, “said Bosworth said during the meeting.” Look, boys, the market is hot. It’s not that hot. “(Meta did not respond immediately to our request for comments.)
On Thursday, researcher Lucas Beyer confirmed that he left OpenAi to become a member of Meta Together with the two others who led the office in Zurich from OpenAi. He tweeted: “1) Yes, we will become a member of Meta. 2) No, we have not received a 100m registration, that’s fake news.” (Beyer politely refused to respond further to his new role of techcrunch.)
Beyer’s expertise is in Computer Vision AI. That is in line with what Meta strives for: Entertainment AI, instead of productivity AI, Bosworth said to say in that meeting. Meta already has an interest in the ground in that area with its Quest VR headsets and its Ray-Ban and Oakley AI glasses.
Yet some of the people who tries to get Meta are indeed large wage packages in this tight AI talent market. As TechCrunch first reported, Meta took the Trapit Bansal from OpenAi, known for its groundbreaking work on AI reasoning models. He has been working at OpenAi since 2022.
Certainly, Scale Co-founder and CEO Alexandr Wang get a healthy piece of money, probably more than $ 100 million, as part of the meta deal to buy 49% ownership of his company. As we have reported earlier, the meta of $ 14 billion paid distributed to shareholders as a dividend in cash. Wang is almost certainly a large shareholder in a scale that is entitled to those dividends.
Although Meta does not hand out Willy-Nilly of $ 100 million, it is still large to hire in AI.
An investor told Techcrunch that he saw an AI researcher – and to reject – a job offer of $ 18 million from Meta. That person took a smaller, but still healthy offer, from a buzzier AI startup: Mira Murati’s Thinking Machines Lab.
