The cathedral of Helsinki is a symbol of the Christian identity of Finland and as such became a target for Islamists during an Ashura procession.
Muslims mark the Day of Ashura as a whole, but for Shia Muslims it is a great religious commemoration. It also became a show of violence and a chance to send a message to Christians and the West.
On the stairs of the historic monument, Muslims met with banners, martyrdom of flags and drawing with Islamic calligraphy in militant style. According to Rair, sUncle of the flags “A striking resemblance to that of jihadist movements.”

There was no neutral act to surround this building with sectarian flags. It was a burglary – a calculated demonstration that were able to overshadow Islamic rituals and militant symbols the most sacred space in Finland.
In the middle, it has long worn political undertones, so crowds are often mobilized in militant processions. In Europe, however, Ashura meetings have increasingly chosen symbolic locations: near government buildings, in city centers and – disturbing – around Christian churches.

Rair notes the importance of the various symbols of violence:
- Red flags Processing “Blood Not No Awenged” – a Shiite battle cry associated with the idea of eternal struggle.
- Black flags Think of jihadist movements, cannot be distinguished in style of those of Jihadi hunters in Iraq and Syria.
- White banners Registered with religious slogans in militant calligraphy.
- A huge Shiite banner explicitly labeled “Helsinki – Finland”Without a doubt that this was a formally organized event, not a spontaneous meeting.
