Message from Eddie Howe after Burnley ‘Let’s try to be positive rather than negative’

Eddie Howe’s Saturday evening message is; “Let’s try to be positive instead of negative.”

This comes after Newcastle United beat Burnley 2-1 at St James’ Park.

The visitors started well and forced a series of corners.

At halftime, however, United deservedly led 2-0 and played against ten men, Bruno Guimaraes scored directly from a corner and Anthony Gordon from the penalty spot.

However, despite controlling the second half, Newcastle United failed to add the third goal that would have made the match more than safe.

With a 2-0 lead you are only one goal away from serious pressure. After surviving the break without conceding further, Burnley were awarded a penalty deep into extra time.

Once that was in, United had a nerve-wracking few minutes to see out and Burnley had another big chance but failed to convert.

This match is a reminder that, as well as seeing the positives of picking up ten points from a possible twelve, Newcastle United also need to start and convert more of the chances they create.

Eddie Howe speaking after Newcastle 2 Burnley 1:

“It was a bizarre ending because it felt like we were at home [and dry] at 2-0.

“One goal can always change things and then the penalty follows.

“The extra man advantage then goes out the window and you have to ignore that.

“It was a slow start.

“Bruno gave us a goal from a corner, we went 2-0 up and I was hoping for a very lively second half, but that didn’t happen.

“We haven’t done well in the right areas.

“In the second half we didn’t do enough to break them.

“It’s a credit to Burnley and how they defended.

“For us it is 10 points out of 12.

“Let’s try to be positive instead of negative.”
