Mercedes-Benz has announced that it has built its 600,000 G-class on its production line in Graz, Austria, where the milestone vehicle is an fully electric G580 with EQ technology that is finished in Obsidian Black Metallic.
Originally developed as a military vehicle, the Geländewagen was offered in 1979 as a civil vehicle and received a growing fan base to become the icon that it is today. Along the way there have been a few special editions, with a recent G-class that is stronger than the 1980s that refers to the one-off 500,000th G-class that rolled from the production line in 2023.
In order to meet the personalization requirements of customers, Mercedes-Benz offered his Manufaktur service for the G-Class in 2019. This has turned out to be a success, because more than 90% of the G-Class customers now opt for at least one Manufaktur option, where the average is three per vehicle.

“Manufaktur also meets the increasing demand from G -Class customers to heritage paint colors and exclusive shades inspired by iconic designs. Since 2024 it has been possible to choose from a maximum of 20,000 paint colors,” the company said in the release.
In addition to the S and E-Class, the G-Class is one of the longest-produced models of the passenger cars in the history of Mercedes-Benz. From the modest start as a commercial vehicle, the G-Class has evolved over the past four decades to become a lifestyle and luxury symbol.
Nevertheless, it retains its reputation as a formidable off-roader by holding on to a Ladder-Frame chassis, differential locks and four-wheel drive. The design elements have also not changed too much, whereby the Boxy shape is linked to round headlights, as well as an exposed spare wheel on a side-free back door.
