Ev here, SUV there. Here is something to remind us why we kept in the first place of cars – a sexy coupé with a large engine under the long hood. Say hello to the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe, the Affalterbach-tailored range of the C236 CLE Coupe, which appeared here for the first time as a ‘300’ in May 2024.
Before we talk about the CLE 53, there is a summary here for those who may not be familiar with the model name. The CLE debut in 2023 as a replacement for the two-door models of the C-Class and E-Class. No more clear C-class Coupe/Cabriolet and E-Class Coupe/Cabriolet-Cle is the uniform model that takes on the ‘e’ name of the larger car. “The best of both worlds: the agility and sportiness of the C-class with the space and status of the E-class,” says Mercedes.
In terms of size, the CLE 164 mm longer, 50 mm wider and 23 mm longer than the C205 C-Class Coupé, with a 25 mm longer wheelbase. Mercedes says that CLE -Achterpassagiers get 10 mm more headroom, 19 mm more shoulder/elbow space and 72 mm more knee seal. The boot is also 60 liters larger. Versus the E-Class Coupé is the CLE 15 mm longer, the same width, 2 mm lower and 8 mm shorter in a wheelbase.
The CLE 53 is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-Six engine with turbo engine that produces 449 PS from 5,800 to 6,100 rpm. This sixte is an improved version of the M256 engine, now designated as the M256M (should have bought the number plate!). Upgrades include optimized combustion rooms with redesigned inlet and outlet channels, new piston rings and optimized injection.
There are also a new exhaust gas turbo charger and an extra electrical compressor (for double forced induction) that offers a significant increase in boost pressure (0.4 bar to 1.5 bar). This makes the peak couple 600 Nm in overboost mode up to 12 seconds, or a normal 560 Nm of 2,200 to 5,000 rpm. The electric turbo and compressor also offer a better response in medium -sized speed ranges, says Mercedes.
There are also a profit at the end of efficiency, thanks to an integrated starter generator (ISG) of the second generation built into the clock housing of the AMG Speedshift TCT 9G automatic transmission. The ISG is part of a mild-hybrid 48-volt electrical system and offers short boosts of 23 PS/205 Nm, recovery, charging point shift, cruising and more flexible start-stop operation.
With the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ All-Wheel Drive system in control, the CLE 53 accelerates in just 4.2 seconds from 0-100 km/h on the way to a covered top speed of 250 km/h, or 270 km/h when activated with the AMG drivers package. For the context, the CLE 300s 2.0l Turbo-Four 259 PS/400 Nm has for a time of 0-100 km/h of 6.2 seconds.
Power is nothing without control, a tire company ever preached and AWD aside, there is a lot of good hardware in this department. The brakes consist of perforated and internally ventilated discs-370 mm units with four-piston fixed calipers in the front, and 360 mm with floating calipers on the back.
The CLE 53 is on AMG Ride Control Suspension with steel springs and adaptive adjustable dampers, which have three modes – comfort, sports and sports+. There is also a three-phase AMG speed sensitive control (maximum angle of 2.5 degrees) as well as rear-wheel control, the latter can work at a maximum angle of 2.5 degrees.
There is also the AMG Dynamic Plus package with a ‘racing’ riding program with Drift mode. The active motorcycle confirmations offer the situational spread between comfortable and sporty connection of the engine with the body, says AMG.
You would expect an AMG model to look wide and aggressive compared to the standard car, and the CLE 53 delivers. Combining the more aggressive advantage with larger air inlets with wide flared front and rear fenders for a muscular appearance, coupled by 20-inch AMG Y-Spaak alloys (of the 19-inch standard) and red-painted calipers.
The front is wider with 58 mm, while it is 75 mm wider at the back. By the way, the striking display car is in matt blue, officially called Manufaktur Spectale Blue Magno. Packages checked by Mercedes-Benz Malaysia include digital light with projection function, AMG exterior night package (high gloss black), AMG Night Package II (Dark Chrome) and the AMG exterior carbon fiber package I.
It is not standard, but if you want the most aggressive look for the CLE 53, an AMG optics package adds Flics to the front and rear aprons, a more pronounced spoiler lip on the boat cover and a diffuser board between the circular exhaust pipe finish. Inside, the Mercedes-Benz user experience (MBUX) contains the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 11.9-inch portrait Central Touchscreen with AMG-specific functions and displays.
Other highlights of the kit are a panoramic glass roof with electric roller sun and comfort opening, environmental lighting with logo projection, AMG performance raised in Artico man-made microfiber, red safety belts (with feeders), head-up display, amg track pace-data 3D-Surround-sound system.
The entrance fee is RM722.888 On the road without insurance. The factory warranty is for four years, unlimited kilometers. Already seduced?
