Heavy.com recently drove A blockbuster -trading idea Alex Debrincat would send that to Toronto as a potential replacement of Mitch Marner. At first glance, the proposed trade would give the Maple Leafs a new potential top wing, to replace the production that was lost with Marner who goes to Vegas. However, the proposed costs are amazing.
In the deal, the author argues that the Leafs could demonstrably offer their top perspective in Easton Cowan, their Power-Play Quarterback defender in Morgan Rielly, a solid top-nine winger in Bobby McMann, and a pick in the first round.
That is a huge package, Debrincat, with only a third-rounder thrown and back to Toronto.
Debrincat set 39 goals and 70 points last season, and his Power -Play production would certainly help to replace many of the points that Marner takes with the Golden Knights. He is only two more seasons in his prime and contract. On paper there is a lot to like in the sweater of a Leafs, even if Debrincat and Marner are different types of attacking producers.
Maple Leafs who pay far too much for Debrincat
But the package described here feels too much payment, a possible made to make the salary cap work.
While trade rumors have surrounded the Blueliner this summer, Rielly is still the best defender of Toronto and one of the longest fed Leafs. He registers heavy minutes in all situations. Exciting him would create a huge gap on the blue line, while he also removes a lot from the score from that back that Toronto is looking for this off season.
Add Cowan, one of the most promising young prospects in the organization, plus a future first round pick, and the price tag simply outweighs the return.
Throwing Mcmann feels like a side issue, but he is more valuable than that.
And at the end of the day, Debrincat is a strong attacking weapon, but he is not Mitch Marner. He does not drive at the same level, nor does he have the same two -way impact. If Toronto is distance from a core defender, a top perspective and a first round pick, the player who comes back a franchise corner should not be a scoring wing player.
Ultimately, while Debrincat would undoubtedly stimulate the attack of the Leafs, paying this type of premium would weaken other critical areas of the schedule. For Brad Treliving, the smarter move can be to hold instead of swinging to an all-in trade that costs too much.
That is of course assuming that Debrincat has the desire to leave Detroit for Toronto – which he might not be able to. He has a no-trade clause with 16 teams as part of his deal.
