Ummul’s determination to follow her education was opposed to resistance of her family, who discouraged her from studying after the 10th grade. Unfussed and driven by an unyielding desire to succeed, Ummul made the courageous decision to leave her family house and live independently in the same slum.
To maintain herself and to finance her education, she started giving tuition lessons to local children, which demonstrated remarkable ingenuity and tenacity. An NGO played an important role in supporting her training in class 10, which underlines the impact of community and external support in its journey.
Ummul achieved excellent academic success against formidable opportunities and scored 91 percent in its 12th administrative exams. Her academic ability earned her a place at Gargi College, Delhi University, where she followed her not -bred studies. Ummul’s passion for learning pushed her further to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), where she undertook a master in international studies and then registered in the MPHIL/PHD program.

She had a long dream to become an civil servant, when she prepared for the UPSC research into the government, one of the most challenging competitors of India. Her ruthless hard work and focus was bearing fruit in 2016 when she cleaned up the exam in her first attempt and secured an All India rank of 420. This milestone marked the realization of Ummul’s ambitions, with the high point that she became an IAS officer, a will for her unbreakable spirit.
