Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris both think they have enough freedom to fight each other for the driver’s championship and disagree with negative reactions to pit wall interference.
McLaren ordered Piastri to go to Norris after he had a slow pit stop in the Italian Grand Prix who cost him a position on the championship leader. Piatri mandatory, despite marking that slow pit stops as part of racing, were considered by the team and says that both McLaren choice would not be satisfied with every observer.
“In the end I think that my biggest collection meal from Monza was that that weekend on pace and my own achievements that it didn’t deserve to finish higher than third, regardless of what else happened in the race,” said Piastri.
“It is clear that the decision we have made as a team is not a good answer to that decision. If we had made the opposite, you would have the opposite half of the fans who say that was wrong, and vice versa. So in the end there is no correct decision in it.
“Am I surprised? Not really. Of course it is a big moment out of the race, and I feel that many fans are fairly quickly to jump on things that are considered controversial. So I am not so surprised, but I think we have enough freedom to control our own fate in the championship.”
With McLaren About to close the constructors’ championship this weekendPiastri says that since Monza conversations have taken place that clean up questions that were asked in the last race, but did not expect any other approach as soon as the team has secured the title.
“Of course there have been thoughts, yes,” he said. “We have had good discussions with the team. Of course, a very discussed moment. We have had many discussions, clarified many things and we know how we will race in the future, what is the most important thing. What happened has been done and I am enthusiastic to race again.
“Not necessarily [going to change] Because of the constructors’ championship, but I think we have had many discussions about how we want to race. And much of that is to stay for us because, in the end, if we give that information, then we become very easy goals to take because everyone knows what we are going to do. So that is all very much in line with all of us, but it stays in -house. “
Norris pointed out that McLaren’s call from the pit wall in Monza did not prevent the drivers from fighting each other as soon as the change of position took place, and that they are almost always left behind to race by the team.
“For 99% of things [we’re free to race]But of course what things look like because of something that happened last weekend, everyone gives a very different opinion or supervision of things, “said Norris.” What happened in Hungary last year was very similar – the director in the leadership has a priority in a pit stop series. That’s exactly what we were [addressing] Last weekend. Those things don’t change.
“As soon as we just recovered the position, Oscar was able to free me, and still had the advantage of starting in my gearbox and trying to race me, so he still generally won. But otherwise we have been free to race every time. It is only in one round of a well series when the main character is always priority
Just like Piastri, Norris says it is to be expected that every decision of the team would come in for criticism, especially given McLaren’s dominance of both championships.
“Not in the world in which we live today, because that is all that people want to do is negative and talking bad about others. So it is no surprise,” he said.
“You also need newspaper heads, you also need people to read things, so it is not a surprise on my part. But it also has no influence on us as a team. It is what you expect today and I think in the world that we live, it is more negativity than positivity.
“We continue to do things in our way. Whether people agree or not, it is not our problem and we don’t really care. So we are happy, we concentrate on ourselves. Of course you always want good things to come out.
“We want it to be honest, we want it to be the same for both of us. And then people can comment on what they want afterwards.”
