Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov battle it out again… online.
On Wednesday, McGregor addressed a recent marketing move by Nurmagomedov, who has lately been selling NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) on the messaging app Telegram.
Specifically, Nurmagomedov sold digital Papakhas (that’s the white fluffy hat that Khabib made famous during his UFC run), with an announcement via his verified Twitter/X account, @TeamKhabib. Nurmagomedov, or whoever runs the account these days, has posted several posts about crypto and investing in recent weeks, with little battle-related content.
Nurmagomedov’s original post about the Papakha sale (presumably in collaboration with a crypto company, although that is not clear) was subsequently deleted, and a new post announcing that the auction had ended was posted to his account on Wednesday. But not before McGregor noticed.
“There is no way that the good guy Khabib used his late father’s name and Dagestan’s culture to scam his fans and sell some digital NFTs online and then delete all the contents after they were sold, robbing his fans of their money?” McGregor wrote in a message tackle sales. “There’s just no way a good guy would do this.”
That immediately prompted a response from Khabib, who posted that the auction had closed exactly two minutes after his response to McGregor.
“You absolute liar. You will always try to darken my name, after you are destroyed that night, but you will never achieve that! Yes, good guys don’t do that. They do not create exclusive digital gifts with real-time value, which you can share with your friends and family. Gifts in the form of Papakha – hat that symbolizes the traditions and culture of the Dagestan people. Traditions and culture that slowly walk across this world, whether you like it or not! Gifts that you can find exclusive on Telegram, the best messaging platform in the world.”

Judge for yourself whether the NFT sale is a scam or not, but after the initial craze that accompanied it a few years ago, their popularity has waned. Digital collectibles remain in a steady declineand it seems doubtful whether they will retain their value in the long term.
