Max Scherzer Discusses Unfinished Business in Toronto, ‘Gut Feeling’ of Blue Jays’ World Series Loss

The Toronto Maple Leafs seem to be the opposite of the 2025 Toronto Blue jays so far this season. While the Leafs have underperformed their high expectations, the Jays have far exceeded their relatively low expectations. Where the Leafs just don’t seem to be performing well as a team, the Jays were an all-time epitome of clubhouse camaraderie.
On Wednesday, Max Scherzer stopped by Leafs Morning Take with Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill to discuss the Blue Jays’ historic run to the World Series and all things Toronto. Reflecting on the Jays’ season, he said the proximity of the roster was a big factor in their success.

“To come into that clubhouse and hang out with everyone, it was the right group of guys,” Scherzer said. “Right fit, right personalities. Veterans, rookies, you name it. Everything just worked, everything clicked, everything fit. So it made for an incredible baseball experience.”

While it was a historic campaign in many ways, the Jays ultimately came up short, losing the World Series in extra innings of Game 7. Questions are now being raised about who can return to the team next season. Currently a free agent, Scherzer admits there is still some unfinished business for him and his teammates in Toronto.

“It certainly feels that way,” he said. “I want everyone in the exact same situation to play the exact same ball. It’s kind of weird to have that happen, where you have such a heartbreaking loss, and yet the whole team says no, we don’t have a problem, we want to get back out there. We’re actually proud of the way we played. We kind of feel like the baseball gods were wrong. We did everything right in a lot of different ways. So yeah, that idea that there’s unfinished business.” We know we are a championship team, and we want to do that.”

.@Jay_D_Rosehill Directly Max Scherzer asked if there is unfinished business in Toronto… 👀 He definitely said a lot of WE and US. Did he tap his hand? 👇

As Alberga notes here, Scherzer certainly said so We And us a lot in his answer, clearly indicating he’s hungry for another chance to win in Toronto. Of course, there are many more factors that will play a role in his and his teammates’ future plans, but it’s something to keep an eye on.

Scherzer took the time to address the feeling of coming so close and then falling short. Just as the Leafs lost to the Panthers in Game 7 last year, and have suffered in many other do-or-die games, Scherzer said it’s a hard thing to come back from.

“It’s a gut punch, an absolute gut punch, if your season is ended in any way, but especially if you’re deep into the playoffs,” he said. “It definitely changes the way you look at the offseason game, what you want to do, how you want to train, all your preparation, changes how you think about the future. You learn so much from those moments, from those losses and how you want to deal with them differently. Everyone processes it differently, but for me you think about it, what would you do differently? Is there something you didn’t prepare for? That’s what drives you crazy at night thinking about what changes you would have actually made. Or are you just proud of everything you’ve done, and there are times when that happens.
