Auston Matthews set a milestone Saturday night that will etch his name in Toronto Maple Leafs history. He broke the Toronto Maple Leafs’ all-time scoring record and spoke after the game about the honor of being in the same conversation as some of the franchise greats. In doing so, he also made comments that – whether intentional or not – could help cool the growing trade speculation surrounding his future in Toronto.
Speak with reportersMatthews commented, “You know… it’s a very historic franchise, and I take a lot of pride in putting on the jersey every day. To be mentioned in the same sentence as some of the greats that have come before us… it means a lot.” For a player at the center of the recent rumors, it sounded like someone was fully committed to where he is now – and not someone planning an exit.
He added: “It’s extremely special, I’m very humbled… and I couldn’t do it without the great group of guys around me. It just means a lot.”
That context matters, especially after respected journalist and radio host Jason Gregor suggested Matthews might not “like life in Toronto.” Gregor did not suggest that there had been a formal trade request. However, there was talk that the infighting within the team and the increasing pressure on Matthews was becoming a bit too much.
Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has since confirmed that Matthews did not ask to be moved.
Toronto is an unforgiving market. The expectations never diminish, the criticism never fades, and the playoff failure is magnified more than anywhere else in the league. Matthews has already accomplished everything individually – scoring titles, league-wide recognition, now franchise history – but post-season success remains the missing piece.
The fact that the team didn’t win and that fingers are now being pointed in his direction is understandable when fatigue sets in. It’s tough being the face of a team that is constantly under pressure.
But for now, Matthews’ own words may matter more than whatever worries or fears fans started to feel. He is proud to be a Maple Leafs and he is honored to have achieved what he has achieved.
What he said Saturday won’t answer the questions in the long run, but maybe they’ll buy the Maple Leafs something they haven’t had in weeks: a temporary break in the noise.
