Matt Wallace wants to become a member of the European Ryder Cup team More than whatever.
The 35-year-old Englishman was a tough snub in 2018, when he won three times, but was not selected by Captain Thomas Bjorn. The five-fold DP world tour champion has emptied the tank to impress Captain Luke Donald prior to the Monday selection roadline. But a year after Wallace achieved a strong start for the qualification of Ryder Cup by winning the Omega European Masters, he came back to Crans-sur-Sierre GC, knowing that he would probably get his dream again.
Wallace placed on social that he had a “heavy heart”, knowing that his Ryder Cup -Lot was probably sealed, but he still hoped to give one last thing to think this week when he defended his title in Switzerland.
It is a year since we were last here in Crans Montana, Switzerland. A year of dedication to my profession, all hoping to get a place in the European Ryder Cup team. I come back with such a heavy heart, but a pride and gratitude towards my team. pic.twitter.com/lrydksb0jr

We have given it everything. The drive and the feeling that I come in when the Ryder Cup is called is quite surreal, especially if it is a match that I never succeeded in being part.
I recorded that I will never stop trying to be part of it until I stopped playing.– Matt Wallace (@Mattsjwallace) August 25, 2025
It is difficult to put into words how much this year meant to me. I will learn from this and be stronger for the next campaign.
For all involved, thank you, and for all fans there are, you are the best and we will go again.– Matt Wallace (@Mattsjwallace) August 25, 2025
Wallace has pushed hard to play his best on the piece, but outside of a T3 in the 3M open, he did not play according to the required standard. Wallace admitted that the pressure he feels tries to make its way to the team undoubtedly had an influence on his game.
āIt has been a hard few weeks, probably more emotional than physical [with] I want to show myself and try to get to the Ryder Cup team if it means so much to you, “Wallace told Europeantour.com earlier this week. Pressure in Golf is like a spirit. It is there, you can’t see it, but you can feel it. It sometimes really influences you your swing.
“You give it everything and I just didn’t have it,” he added. āI will not give up, there is an extra week. [But] I don’t believe I will be able to get a choice, but it’s outside of my control and my hands, so we’ll leave it to Luke. “
Yet Wallace put the pedal down in Switzerland this week in a final attempt to influence Donald. He shot rounds of 65, 63 and 65 to claim himself to defend his title. He fired a final round 67 on Sunday, but that was not enough to get it done when Wallace placed 20-under-par, which was two shots behind winner Thorston Lawrence.
After his last round, Wallace became very emotional when he was asked about his Ryder Cup chances. He tried to stop the tears for more than 40 seconds before he got one sentence out of his push in the direction of his dreams.
“I will never give up the Ryder Cup,” Wallace said before I walked away.
Wallace finished 12th in the rankings of the European Ryder Cup. Rory Mcilroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, Robert Macintyre, Tyrrell Hatton and Rasmus Hojgaard automatically qualified for the team. On Monday it is expected that Donald Ludvig Aberg, Viktor HOVOLAND, Shane Lowry, Jon Rahm, Sepp SPLA and Matt Fitzpatrick selects, because Europe wants to run 11 of the 12 players back from the 2023-winning Ryder Cup team.
Wallace is seen as a bubble man together with people like Marco Penge and Nicolai Hojgaard, but based on Wallace’s out for emotion, it feels like he already knows that his fate is decided, and now he will have to wait until 2027 to try to achieve a lifetime dream.
