Matt Targett is now set to make a switch to Middlesbrough.
BBC Tees reports (see below) that their information is that the 29 -year -old defender goes on loan for the season.
Matt Targett has had a terrible time with injuries and illness in recent seasons and it looks a good move for a championship club where he should regularly get football.
His current Newcastle United contract is reportedly ending on June 30, 2026, so to eventually get some sort of transfer costs, I think Newcastle United could have the option to activate an extra year on his current contract, or sign a new deal to expand one year before he sets his loan.
Matt Targett did not remove the 20 -man MatchDay team last weekend and there are very limited opportunities if he stayed at NUFC this season.
For those with short memories, easy to forget that it was Matt Targett and then Burn, who were the two most important players who entered in January 2022, in that desperate fight against relegation. Kieran Trippier quickly picked up a bad injury, while Bruno made his first (away) no more than six weeks after signing and his first home only in April 2022. It was Matt Targett and then Burn who played immediately after the game after signing and the key to turn.
Matt Targett was very unlucky to be omitted the following season, Sven Botman came in and then Burn moved to the left. United with the best defense in the Premier League that the 2022/23 season (jointly lowest number of goals with MAN City). Targett then has a catalog of bad luck with injuries and illness, which means that he was rarely available.
Interested to see what happens to another defender of Newcastle United. Now that Malick Thiaw arrived, Jamaal Lascelles noticed that he did not make the 20 -men team last weekend in Villa. Will he be happy to be at the edges of this United Squad, or will Lascelles also look for the first team football elsewhere?
BBC Sport report – August 22, 2025:
‘Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards has solved one of his two excellent problems by landing Matt on a season loan from Newcastle, BBC Tees understands.
Edwards wanted a left-wing wing-back with Alex Bangura with a hamstring injury and Targett had fallen out of the grace in Newcastle since his £ 15 million switch from Aston Villa in 2022.
The defender made only five gigs under manager Eddie Howe last season, with only 19 minutes Premier League promotion.
Targett, 29, has a wealth of top experience that started his career at Southampton and spent three years at Villa after a loan in Fulham.
Edwards had also identified Max Arfsten of Columbus Crew as a possible recruit, but the MLS side was not willing to sell it.
The Boro boss also wants to sign a striker before the transfer window closes on 1 September. ‘
