Matt Shaw is not worried if he is opposed to some play after he has left the Cubs on Sunday to attend Charlie Kirk’s monument.
Shaw, a 23-year-old Rookie, explained to reporters before Tuesday’s collision with the Mets that he had become friends with Kirk this season in Arizona and that the wife of the killed conservative activist, Erika, had reached him to attend the memorial service in State Farm Stadium in Glendale.
The first round Pick of 2023 added that he spoke with manager Craig Counsell, President Jed Hoyer and a few Cubs veterans before he decided to attend the ceremony that also president Donald Trump and political figures as speakers contained only 11 days after the founder of the Turn-Eve Usa.
Shaw, when he was asked if he was worried about a recoil for attending the event about politics, he repeated that he was not.
“Yes, absolutely, I’m not worried at all, no,” Shaw said. “My connection was through our faith. That is something that drives me every day, that is why I am able to do what I do every day. … which recoil is ok, I feel strong about my faith that was meant.”
Without Shaw, the Cubs, who had already locked up a birth after the season, lost from the Reds, 1-0. He said it was important to have the ‘support’ of his teammates before he chose to leave.
“I made sure that everyone with whom I spoke to, I had their support that they knew why I was going, that I did not leave just to leave, that it was something that was really important for my faith,” ” Shaw said according to the Chicago Tribune. “It was really nice to see how everyone could support me at the time.
“I felt that it was something that was really important to me to do … I was very grateful for how the team reacted, so I could do that, was really special.”
He was back in the line -up against the Mets on Tuesday, hit eighth and played third base. Shaw added that he and Kirk often sent an SMS this season about the progress of the Cubs.
‘[Kirk] Was one of the biggest Cubs fans I have ever met, “said Shaw.” He texted me after every game, “great victory for the Cubbies.” He was super, super, super supportive for us and clearly someone who was very loyal, so we also made contact at that front. “
