Colt Knost asked Matt Every the question golf fans have been asking for years: “How many times have you been fined on the PGA Tour, and how many total?”
Everyone exhaled to think.
“I don’t know the exact total number of fines or the dollar amount,” said Every, the guest on the latest episode of GOLF’s Subpar Podcast. “I know my biggest was, I think I have 20 [thousand] twice. And then as a pair, a handful of fives.”
“What were the 1920s for?”
“I don’t listen to the 5’s,” he said. [Laughs]
Each played in 279 PGA Tour events, winning twice (the Arnold Palmer Invitational back-to-back in 2014 and 2015) and earning more than $10 million in career earnings, but he was also known for his fiery behavior on the course.
Everyone said his famous club throw at AT&T Byron Nelson at Trinity Forest led to one of the bigger fines in 2019.
He played well that week, going low on his second round, but on the par-5 14th hole a drive cleared what he thought was a center bunker — which would have left only a 6-iron for his second shot — buried in the bunker lip.
“I didn’t know how to deal with it at the time,” Every said. “I cut this thing out, and 10 meters was the most I could get out of it, and I blacked out for a moment.”
Everyone threw their bat into the air. The good folks at Getty Images must have thought it was such an impressive throw that they made a whole photo series of it.

Every said some of the fines were due to tournament volunteers reporting him, and he also said that PGA Tour rules official Stephen Cox always seemed to be around when Every was cooking, joking that Cox would put on camouflage and wait in the trees for Every to slip.
“There would be times when I would miss a putt or pull an iron shot and I would look and I would see Steven on the mound and he was looking at me 20 seconds after the ball had already left the face,” Every said. “And I yelled at him and said, ‘Do you want me to throw it? Or are you waiting for me to do this? Because I will. I’m crazy enough to do this now.'”
However, each says his club throwing days are behind him and the memorable Byron Nelson toss is probably the last he has. Today he is the host of “The Drop” on Golf Channel and a golf analyst for the PGA Tour and ESPN. You can listen to the full interview with Every here or look further YouTube below.
