The Masters Olympia is supposed to be the victory round for the living legends of Bodybuilding – a showcase for veterans ever fought in the Mr. Have cut Olympia podium and their names in the history of the sport. The recent Japanese edition promised that prestige. What we received was entertaining, but not entirely the selection names that the Olympia is used to.
The only legend
Hidetada Yamagishi was the only real name that connected this show with the legendary past of Olympia. A legitimate veteran bodybuilding -star, a Mr. Olympia finalist from 2007, and the most celebrated Pro in Japan, Hide brought credibility and presence on stage. He became second in the 212 division – a gift, some would say – but his involvement gave fans at least a real reason to tune into. After hidden the line -up was filled with athletes who would not recognize much outside their home regions. These were not Dexter Jacksons, Chris Cormiers, Brandon Currys, Samir Bannouts or even Robby Robinsons. In fact, at the age of 80, Robinson may have had a chance on the top three here. That is how thin this selection was on real Olympia caliber veterans. Moreover, Robby still looks insane!
Global Stream, local language
The event was technically available for the world, but with a catch – it was only broadcast in Japanese, on a domestic platform, without English comments or subtitles. That meant that you could look everywhere, but unless you are fluent fluently, you really guess what happened between poses. For a show that tries to realize an international audience, that is a small but striking misstep that can be easily resolved next year.
Price money without the selection names
The wallet was modest – around $ 229,000 in total, with $ 20,000 to the open winner of the men. That is similar to some European shows and offering some smaller American events above. But only prize money does not create prestige. Without names that resonate with the history of sport, the value of those payouts in terms of fan interest rate is minimal.

A masters without his masters
If this event wants to stand next to its own branding, the promoters have to do better work to subtract the legends of Olympias who put the sport on the map. That means recruiting the real icons -whose CV’s Top Olympia placements, Arnold Classic victories and years include in the Pro rungraves. Without them it is not yet Masters Olympia in Geest – just in name.
However, repairing this is not that complicated:
- Offer at the latest for proven veterans.
- Worldwide market with English -language coverage.
- Leverage social media with behind the scenes and marking packages.
The judgment of the masters
Masters Olympia Japan had the title, the location and the budget – but this year the star power of the sport and the global performance was missing to make it more than a local pro -show with a famous name. Hide Yamagishi gave it some legitimacy, but one legend makes no masters.
The Masters Olympia has the opportunity to grow. However, it needs the help of the bodybuilding legends to take shape to the Olympia. Otherwise the Masters Olympia will remain a Masters show – only the masters.
