Manchester United pulled off a superlative second-half effort to dismantle Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux on Monday and climb to sixth in the Premier League.
The visitors took the lead in the first half through a sloppy shot from Bruno Fernandes, but were pulled back when the home team equalized just before half-time.
Ruben Amorim must have been furious with his players at the break, and that certainly fueled his stars as they came out with purpose in the second half.
Bryan Mbeumo rediscovered his scoring touch soon afterwards, before a brilliant volley from Mason Mount made it three for the away side. The skipper then completed the scoring from the spot.
Sometimes sparkling things according to Mason Mount
Apart from the goals, some of the interplay, especially between the Englishman and the club captain, was wonderful to watch. The former Chelsea ace hinted at the same in his post-match interview.
“I thought some of the future combinations were clear and sharp and that’s what we can do,” he said. “We know we can do that. It’s about us as attackers creating as many chances as possible and trying to get on the scoresheet.”
“I thought we were solid going forward, and as a defense it’s about defending as a team and not giving them any chance to get back into the game.”
Given recent results, a win against bottom-of-the-table Wolves was far from guaranteed. And that certainly seemed to be the case at the end of the first half.
Amorim’s words made an impression
Amorim’s words had an impact, according to the England international. “It was an important win for us, of course [in the] In the first half we let them back in before half time and we go into the locker room frustrated and disappointed about the end of the first half.
“The manager had a few things to say and we got there and it was up to us to attack with purpose and finish our chances that we created.
“We are happy with the second half, but also with parts of the first half. Overall very happy with it.”
The 20-time English league champions cannot afford to relax, with their next match against bogey side Bournemouth next Monday. With AFCON’s departure looming, it will be a tough crack.
