It becomes clear, after the signing of Kirill Kaprizov, that there will be a drop effect on other current UFAs and teams that want to sign star players in an increasing salary cap era. The impact will be felt especially for teams that have players under contract that are not fully sold when holding their current club.
That is the case with Martin Necas and the Colorado Avalanche.
Does the Kaprizov deal changes the position of Necas?
The AAV AAV deal from KPARZOV will send a message to many free agents, some of whom are looking for cash in. Necas is probably a player who uses the Kaprizov deal as similar, even if it is not in the same price range.
According to Frank Seravalli from Bleacher reportNecas, a hanging unlimited free agent, needs a new deal before he goes on the open market on July 1, 2026. Seravalli suggests that the Avalanche could donate to the potential price, especially when Necas sees the Kaprizov -deal and says, “At least I am worth this if he has.”
The avalanche does not want to lose the player, but they are not willing to get somewhere around what the representatives of Necas can ask.
Necas, 26, closes a two-year Bridge deal with an AAV of $ 6.5 million that he signed with the Carolina Hurricanes in July 2024. He was traded to Colorado six months later as part of the Mikko Rantan dealer. Last season, Necas set 27 goals and 83 points over 79 games divided between Carolina and Colorado, with five points in seven Playoff matches for the Avalanche.
He is undoubtedly talented, but there were also whispering that he was not happy with the fit in Colorado. If it is true, it makes sense that he will ask for the ceiling of what he can get, ready to test the open market if the AVS is not willing to play the ball.
Is this again a rantan situation with Necas?
Seravalli notes that if Necas produces another point-per-game season, its market value could push its AAV north of $ 10 million. Ironically, that is about what the avalanche would pay to pay Rantanen before they felt the need to trade it because it was too much money.
With the considerations of the salary cap and schedule, Colorado may have to make a difficult decision to trade Necas, so that they immediately return to the same situation with which they were confronted when they brought Rantanen in a shocking turn to the hurricanes.
