Andrew Marshall leads the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship in the halfway phase of the flag ship tournament of the Legends Tour, after registering the first sub-70 round of the week in a Windwept Trump International in Aberdeen.
The Engelsman is two-under-under 36 holes, one for Spaniard Carlos Balmaseda who has evolved his first hole of the day to a gritty 71. Although the organizers have brought forward a number of T-pieces and the Greens delayed to alleviate the strong wind, the duo are the only players under par.
Former champion Peter Baker is third at +1 after a fight 71, next to Sean Whiffin. Former PGA Tour player Bo van Pelt is at +2, together with Maarten Lafeber and PGA Professional Damian Moeney.
Stnight leader Michael Jonzon went nicely on -3 while he was on his way to turn, but a catastrophic 11 on the Par -Vier 9one – With three lost balls of the Tee – puts a serious dent in his challenge. But the credit on the Swede, because from that moment he came home in level-par to sit on +4 and for 10oneOnly six back.
Marshall did not have such a drama in putting together a beautiful round of 69 in extremely challenging circumstances. He opened himself with five birdies in his first seven holes and was then stable, despite the fact that he dropped a few shots on the rear nine.
“I knew I played well,” said Marshall. “I started an incredible start, and I just didn’t think too much about it, just kept getting the ball and it went in. I just hit less club, put it in the game, and I saw many people tearing their hair out because they hit the driver to pick up shots. I just tried to poke the center and accept a good.”
After countless near-miss, including three top fives last season, Marshall is now 36 holes of a Maiden Legends Tour title. “I am currently in the lead, what is a bit discouraging, but it is what you dream about, not? ‘It is very satisfying to shoot under par today, “said Baker.” I drive it fairly straight and make a few second shots close. I had a good run in the middle of the round, many opportunities and made one or two. Par on every hole is a good score, so happy.
‘I bogey the 11oneMy second hole of the day, and then on my third I got a bit of a flyer from the rough and I went over the green. Hit a decent chip to about 15 feet and then threw it behind. Even early in the round it felt important and then I hit many good photos.
“I don’t mind if the wind really blows, it’s up to you to continue, play a shot one time, because it can be very fast here. And if you miss a shot, you just try to limit the damage. It’s not getting any easier, so it’s just a chance to have a chance on Sunday.”
If the only regular Legends Tour event with a halfway cut, Friday at the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship is a day of extra tension and danger. Host Colin Montgomerie missed narrowly, but his colleague Ryder Cup captains José María Olazábal and Paul McGinley both fought through a way, just like big winners Rich Beem and Shaun Micheel, together with 1999 open champion Paul Lawrie who is on +6, for 22ND.
