Google helps Africa to take the lead about the growing momentum of AI on the entire continent.
Google has officially promised $ 37 million to support the AI future of Africa, with investments that include research, talent development and infrastructure.
On July 24, Google went to Accra, Ghana, to reveal The Gulf of AI-Constructed initiatives throughout Africa was aimed at the growing influence in the AI room, Google’s Africa -Blog announced. By working together with local researchers, including its Google research teams in Kenya and Ghana, developers and organizations, the technology giant is planning to stimulate AI innovation that is rooted in African perspectives with a global impact.
“The AI future of Africa is already taking shape – in classrooms, research laboratories, creative studios and small companies on the continent,” said Google. “Today’s announcements build on our conviction that when communities have the tools and resources they need, they create technologies that can transform the world.”
The core of the new initiatives is the AI Community Center in Accra, a special HUB for learning, innovation and cross-disciplinary cooperation. By organizing technical workshops, research exchanges and community events, Google wants to bring students, developers, entrepreneurs, artists and the local community together to investigate how AI can be used to tackle the unique challenges and opportunities of Africa.
Google has also promised $ 25 million to the AI Collaborative: Food Security, which supports African researchers and non-profit organizations with the help of AI to tackle hunger, to tackle the resilience of crops and help small farmers with real-time insights. An investment of $ 3 million was assigned to Masachane African Talen AI HUB to expand research and open-source tools for more than 40 African languages to stimulate digital inclusion.
As an addition to its dedication to the future of Africa in AI, Google each invests $ 1 million in the Afidsai and the Wits Mind Institute of the University of Pretoria to support graduated and postdoctoral AI research, which grew Africa’s role in the worldwide AI innovation. As an addition to the 6.5 million people who grow with Google digital training throughout Africa, Google invests $ 7 million to expand AI education and safety programs in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, focused on AI skills, cyber security and online safety.
Scholars in Ghana will also benefit from 100,000 fully funded Google Career Certificate Scholarships, designed to equip higher education students with much sought after skills and open doors to new career paths. Google also supports entrepreneurs through its Catalytic Fund Initiative, designed to help more than 100 AI-driven startups grow and bring locally relevant AI solutions for the market.
“We are pleased to continue to support Africa’s AI journey and to work with the researchers, developers, educators and entrepreneurs who build what comes after,” said Google.
