Marseille have appointed a former Newcastle United star as Roberto De Zerbi’s replacement.
The French club appoints Habib Beye as its new boss.
An interesting move, because last week the former Newcastle United defender was fired by Rennes.
Habib Beye is now quickly taking charge at Marseille, who are fourth in Ligue 1, two places and six points above Rennes in sixth.
Marseille had parted ways with Roberto De Zerbi after a 5-0 defeat to PSG, on top of a Champions League group stage elimination.
Habib Beye spent four years at Marseille during his playing career before leaving for Newcastle United in 2007 as he approached his 30th birthday.
Newcastle United fans will remember him as a stylish right-back and one of the few successes of Sam Allardyce’s (thankfully!) short era when he arrived at NUFC in August 2007.
Habib Beye also had a quality terrace song (‘Happy Days’).
Marseille says about this Habib Beye appointment: “His deep connection with Olympique de Marseille and his thorough knowledge of the Marseille environment can be great assets in taking the club to the next step.”
After two seasons at United, Habib Beye moved to Aston Villa in 2009 before ending his playing career at Doncaster Rovers.
