The Marlins have a direct right of the right Luarbert Arias to Triple-a Jacksonville, according to a report from Daniel Alvarez Montes of the extra. this afternoon. Arias was previously designated for allocation by Miami in a flurry of schedule movements earlier this week, but the club clearly successfully passed the right side through exemptions.
Arias, 24, debuted earlier this year with the Marlins. A product from Maracay, Venezuela, Arias signed as an amateur and made his pro -debut in 2018. He stayed around the Padres organization in the lower levels of the minors until he was picked from San Diego by the Marlins in the Minor League phase of the 2021 rule 5 Draft. He made his organizational debut in 2022 and usually threw well at the level of Single-A before he enjoyed something of a breakout season in 2023 when he placed a 1.84 ERA in 58 2/3 innings work between the High-A and Double-A levels.
Arias earned those excellent performance to Triple-A in 2023, and in 86 1/3 innings work at the level in the past two seasons he usually looked reasonable with a 3.23 ERA in 59 outings. A strike out rate of 22.0% at a running speed of 9.7% leaves something to be desired, but those peripheral numbers looked better in 2024 than they have this year, if he has only beaten 8.5% of his opponents while he walks 15.9% in 15 performances. Regardless of those struggles, the Marlins still chose to get Arias from Triple-A to make his Major League debut this year. He struggled poorly through 10 1/3 innovation work and gave up an ERA of 11.32 with a strike output of 18.2% at a running speed of 9.1%.
While Arias misses the required service time to reject the assignment in favor of the free agency, he has an earlier right on his file after he was immediately removed from Miami’s selection earlier this year. That means he can go early in the free desk if he chooses it, but anyway, he will get Minor League-free agency at the end of the season if he is not added to the 40-man Roster before that time. The right -handed would then be available at the open market for every team that is interested in taking a chance of him. Given his success at Triple-A recently as last year and the fact that he has minimal service time with remaining Minor League options, he should be a fairly attractive candidate for a Minor League deal in a free agency if it is not added to the 40-man roster of Miami.
