In recent years, Sakkari has regularly kicked off her season by representing her country. 2026 will be no exception as Greece will once again be led by 2021 French Open semi-finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Since the two-time WTA champion was a regular at the United Cup, the organizers decided to surprise the Greek tennis star with her favorite cookies. The 30-year-old loved it, but also took the opportunity to joke about receiving the sweet gift right after wrapping up her preseason duties.
Sakkari: My fitness trainer won’t be happy if he sees that
“My fitness trainer won’t be happy to see them, but that’s no problem. I’ll be here for about a month and a half – I drink one a day, or one every second day!” said the former WTA world number 3.
Friday is the opening day of United Cup action. That day, Greece will face Japan.
In the women’s singles, Sakkari will face Naomi Osaka. They have played five times in the past and the Japanese four-time Grand Slam champion led their head-to-head matches 3-2. However, it should be noted that all five of their previous meetings took place between 2018 and 2021.
After his meeting with Osaka, Sakkari will also compete against 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu at the United Cup.
