Marcus Rashford leaves Man Utd as the club legend who was abandoned

As Marcus Rashford is revealed as a new Barcelona player, one can only feel that it could all be so different.

The united fan born in Manchester who ran his debut twice seemed a fairy-tale story, and for a while it was, while the then 18-year-old even played a role in a large trophy victory when Manchester United won a first FA cup in 13 years in May.

Fast forward to 2025 and fans and experts, however, seem to be a unanimous agreement that a loan issue for a once claimed Academy product is best for all parties.

But although a large part of the fan base quickly blamed the 27-year-old, it can pay for both United and their fans to look inside thinking about what went wrong with their latest club legend.

It is true that in recent years things have hardly been wrong for Rashford, and yet he will stand in line next season for one of the world’s best sides.

And although the obvious financial problems of Barcelona have contributed to the deal, Rashford has proven that he can play at this level.

138 goals in 426 games for Manchester United is a statistics that speaks for itself, despite the relatively low form of United of recent times, and he is one of the only recent players of United who could really claim world class at a certain moment, even if it was just a season.

In fact, only a handful of recent United players – including Angel di Maria, Paul Pogba and Juan Mata – can claim that they are more natural than the Englishman, with less possession still the same physical characteristics that are so essential for the platforms of such talent in the Premier League.

And Rashford has also been the most successful and has won one Europa League, two FA cups and two competition cups since his debut. A modest return compared to some of his predecessors, but not something to sniff in the consideration of the state of the club during his own peak years.

Some legends are made because of their contribution during glory years, others include mixed periods and some are made during the worst years of a club. Rashford Falls in the Middle, an ever -present years since his debut, a winger that stood for everything, is supposed to be the idealized United Player: fast, direct, competent, with the possibility of getting fans of their seats and scoring goals. It is these factors that will appeal to Barcelona.

And with regard to explaining the exit of Rashford, it is sufficient to say that he is simply the most recent in a long list of players who dropped the club, from Di Maria and Pogba to Wayne Rooney.

United States is nowadays a picture of failure, from the field to the boardroom and in many areas in between. This has shown most clearly on the field, in a theme that has been taking over since the glassers. Rooney was the first to realize when he questioned the club’s ambition in 2010.

Rashford is just another one on this list, an easy scapegoat because of its deeper ties with the club. Some fans will argue the opposite, point out how Rashford supposedly “downset tools” and although poor performance in the last two seasons, they do not look at the larger whole. In addition to Rashford, Bruno Fernandes is probably the only success story that comes from the period between 2016 and 2025. If only two players can succeed in the club, whose fault is that probably?

Instead of blaming Rashford, it might be better to ask ourselves: what exactly did we expect? For Rashford to wear one of the largest clubs in the world on his back for almost a decade and to win the Champions League while he does?

From exploring and buying the required level of player to hiring poor managers, it is an undisputed fact that United Constant fails in important areas, so to pin all debt for this current situation on Rashford is clearly unfair.

But it is precisely that constant debt that the situation of Rashford will have made worse. Unfortunately for him, for countless reasons, Rashford continues to pull the anger of United fans, but instead of something constructive, he is only subjected to questions about his dedication or an increase in the coverage of the general press about every problem, from relationships to the cars he drives.

People quickly reject the human reasons when evaluating where things went wrong for different football players, often with regard to the wages they make, as if there is a certain payment threshold, which makes you magically immune to abuse.

Just like Paul Pogba and many others in England for him, Rashford has also received the entire spectrum of abuse on social media. A difficult thing to deal with at any time, let alone when everything you do is examined on top.

And so the question is again asked we really expect that he would almost give a hand to different titles despite all this?

Of course it can’t happen for him in Catalonia, and he can get a similar level of media attention in the well -camp. But one of the biggest questions about Rashford’s career is always the ‘what if?’

What if he played in an easier competition? What if he had a better structure, better teammates, better managers? We’re going to find out.

He may not have fulfilled the early promise at United, but it is difficult not to feel happy for Rashford, because he is revealed as a Barcelona player. The fan of the Boyhood United may not have achieved what he wanted, but he now has the chance to shine in a club on a similar stage, but with a much more useful structure around him (despite Barca’s well -published problems).

But whatever happens to his United Future, Barcelona offers a chance for Rashford to achieve his domestic football dreams, to earn a place in the English team and go back to loving football – and that is an opportunity he deserves, regardless of what Teddy Sherdingham thinks.
