Manchester United Women manager Marc Skinner has spoken to the press ahead of tomorrow’s crucial match against Tottenham Hotspur.
United are currently third in the league and have the opportunity to move up to second depending on other results.
A week later they will face the same opposition in the League Cup quarter-final, with a visit to Turin to face Juventus in between.
United are approaching transfers
Skinner has regularly spoken about the club’s need to sign players to compete in all competitions in January and was positive about this happening during the press conference, in comments from the official club website.
He explained: “We’re hopefully close to a few players already, which I think will be exciting.”
Skinner continued: “We have to be creative within the boundaries, but what I’m saying is we have to add to the group. I think I’ve said this all along… I think everyone has said it, right? But I have to emphasize, and I have to emphasize again, it’s not because of the quality of my players, it’s just the depth to kind of continue that experience as well, especially with the level of competition.”
The manager said it “would be nice” to add more players than the two the club is about to sign, and the forward line in particular needs to be strengthened.
The Peoples Person has already reported this morning that United are interested in Bayern Munich striker Lea Schuller and Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist.
Response to criticism of rotation
A key feature of this season is Skinner running the side. Elisabeth Terland and Melvine Malard have regularly changed in role number nine.
Furthermore, both Jess Park and Ella Toone were dropped to the bench in the humbling 0-3 defeat to Olympique Lyonnais in midweek.
In response to this criticism, he replied: “What I would say is that if I don’t rotate, people will question that. If I do rotate, people will wonder why I do. It’s not about prioritizing any game. There’s no way we could just save ourselves for Tottenham.”
Geyser
Interestingly, Skinner also stated that Brazilian star Geyse’s future remains very much open.
He claimed that “everything is on the table” regarding her future.
The 27-year-old joined United in 2024, but struggled to adapt to life in England, and controversy arose when her agent claimed the club tried to loan her out while she attended her brother’s funeral.
She was eventually loaned out to Gotham FC in March, but the US team has confirmed that won’t stay on their roster and will indeed return to United.
