The Edmonton Oilers have been looking in vain for months to sign Andrew Mangiapane. Those talks cooled in recent weeks amid the Winter Olympics, although a report from insider David Pagnotta on Monday reignited the rumors, raising hopes that GM Stan Bowman can find the veteran winger a new home before the March 6 trade deadline.
Several teams have been linked to Mangiapane throughout the process, although one candidate that has attracted attention – Toronto, thanks to its connection in Calgary with General Manager Brad Treliving – doesn’t appear to be all that interested. Insider Nick Kypreos revealed on his latest trade board that the Maple Leafs were approached with the idea of a one-for-one trade for Matias Maccelli, but that wasn’t something they were willing to do.
Kypreos wrote:
“Things just haven’t worked out between the Oilers and Mangiapane, and it’s not believed his no-trade clause would stand in the way of much as he’d also like to try elsewhere… The Oilers were willing to send Mangiapane to Toronto for Matias Maccelli, but the feeling is the Leafs weren’t all that interested in it,”
The 29-year-old Mangiapane is only in the first year of a two-year, $7.2 million contract he signed to join Edmonton this summer. On the other hand, the 25-year-old Maccelli has a pending RFA in the third and final year of the three-year, $10.275 million extension he originally signed with the Mammoth in 2023.
Mangiapane has struggled mightily with 12 points (six goals, six assists) in 49 games in his first season as an Oiler, while Maccelli has put up 24 points (10 goals, 14 assists) in 46 games played in his first year in Toronto.
Earlier this season, a change of scenery between Mangiapane and Maccelli would have made a lot of sense. However, after a slow start, the latter has started to find his feet with his new team in recent months, likely putting an end to that opportunity. If the Finnish winger continues to click alongside William Nylander and John Tavares, he could be in line for a new contract to remain with the Maple Leafs beyond 2025-2026.
If the Oilers want to move Mangiapane before the deadline at this point, it will likely be either as a pure cap dump or by bringing him in as part of a larger trade to balance the salary they acquire and stay under the cap.
