The Penguins come into this matchup as the second-best team in the Metro Division and look to continue racking up points early in the season. As for the Maple Leafs, they are tied for third place in the Atlantic Division and need to build on the strong game they had against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.

It’s a battle between stars. Who will win? Find out below in the game overview.

Summary of the game

1st Period:

The first period started with a good pace for the first five minutes. There were hardly any interruptions, allowing both teams to get into the game quickly and pick up the pace. The first real scoring opportunity of the match came just before the twelve minute mark when Sidney Crosby collected a pass and threw it over the blue line to Evgeni Malkin, but he sent the ball wide. Afterwards, both teams exchanged chances, but the match remained scoreless.

Erik Karlsson broke the ice with 6:52 left in the first. He received a beautiful pass from Crosby, who sent him across the ice. That allowed Karlsson to run in and rip the ball over Anthony Stolarz’s shoulder for his first goal of the season. After a power play opportunity (PP), the Maple Leafs failed to score. Moments later, the Penguins found the back of the net again, but it was reviewed to confirm it was a good goal. After the review, the goal stood, giving Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead, which they took into the break.

2nd Period:

The second frame was without a doubt one of the worst stretches of the Maple Leafs season. They seemed very disconnected, turned over a lot of pucks and couldn’t get any traction. The Penguins have worked hard to bring that to light. They used their speed to get into the offensive zone and stayed there for most of the period.

The Penguins played almost twelve straight minutes in the second and it resulted in Ben Kindel scoring his second goal of the game, making the lead 3-0. After the goal, the Maple Leafs looked like they were just skating around chasing pucks with no real pushback. Closer to the end of the second inning, the Maple Leafs generated a few direct opportunities but were unable to capitalize on them, and the period ended with them trailing 3–0 and being booed off the ice.

3rd Period:

As the third period began, the Maple Leafs wanted to turn things around and at least score a goal. They had eight shots after 40 minutes, and within the first two minutes they had two. It didn’t take long after their strong play. Auston Matthews, someone who had been quiet for most of the match, broke behind the Penguins defenders after a faceoff and beat Tristan Jarry through the five hole to cut the lead to two.

Shortly afterwards, William Nylander caught a flying puck in the offensive zone and backhanded it over Jarry to cut the lead to just one within five minutes. In a crazy turn of events, Nylander sent a long shot that beat Jarry and tied the game at 3-3. After Craig Berube stacked the top line, the momentum shifted, allowing Toronto to score three goals in a span of 3:24 to take the lead. The Maple Leafs didn’t stop there. Bobby McMann stopped a second attempt to put them ahead 4-3 in a shock twist. The Penguins got their goalie with just over two minutes left, but had no luck and Toronto won the game 4–3.
