Maple Leafs Roster Shuffle: Cap Tricks, call -ups and gambling for keepers – The Hockey Writers Toronto Maple Leafs latest news, analysis and more

It goes fast with the Toronto-esdoorn leaves. The selection is almost stuck, but there is a chess game going on under the surface: gymnastics with salary limits, paper transactions and smart timing around the reserve for long -term injured (LTIR).

We think that Maple Leafs fans sometimes miss how tight the margins are. It’s not just about who plays well; The point is who fits under the cap on a certain day. An example: the Easton Cowan situation, where a salary difference of $ 2,500 may have determined who starts the season at the big club.

That kind of micro movements says a lot about where the Maple Leafs are now. They bring development, depth and dollars to the cent – and do it while they bring in a new coach and new selection pieces.

Easton Cowan from Maple Leafs is involved in a paper shuffle

Cowan was sent on paper to the American Hockey League (AHL) Toronto Marlies. In reality that can only take a few days. Puckpedia pointed out that the Maple Leafs Jacob Quillan briefly kept the selection because his slightly higher salary helped them to get closer to the limit before he placed Marshall Rifai on LTIR. As soon as that happens, Cowan can be recalled almost immediately.

It is the kind of dopmaneuvre that you can easily overlook, but is crucial for maximizing the room. The Maple Leafs are now experts: they always go to the border without crossing it.

We think Cowan will start his professional career with the Marlies, and that’s fine. He has shown enough to suggest that he is coming back. Head coach Craig Berube loves his spark and called the chemistry of the couple: Cowan and Scott Laughton looked good before the Laughton injury. If Laughton returns, don’t be surprised if they are reunited.

Arrival of Cayden Primeeau and departure of James Reimer

The Maple Leafs caused a furore again Claiming exemptions for Cayden Primeeau And the termination of the professional test contract (PTO) by James Reimer. Reimer’s return was short -lived, but his presence clearly served a goal: a veteran insurance policy during the camp.

Primeau is now a bit of a question mark. Dericated by the Montreal Canadiens in 2017He spent most of his career finding his position in the NHL, where he registered 55 NHL competitions and 174 in the AHL. The Maple Leafs probably see him as a temporary depth while Joseph Woll heals.

Dennis Hildeby, who was sent to the Marlies, is still the number 1 AHL goalkeeper of the organization. He will play a lot, which may be better for his development than being behind Anthony Stolarz. Primeeau can be a backup in the short term, but Hildeby remains the gamble in the long term.

Exemptions and the new look of the Marlies

Every player who placed the Maple Leafs on exemptions was erased – including defender Henry Thrun. Now that Toronto is on the blue line, Thrun needs a few injuries or a striking AHL-Run to get another NHL shot. It is a difficult breakthrough for a player with 115 NHL matches and only 18 in the AHL, but the defense of the Maple Leafs has become so deep.

We expect a completely different Marlies schedule this season. Together with Cowan, Hildeby, Thrun and a handful of others, this starts to be one of the most competitive AHL teams in years-a test site for those who are the next one in line.

A final thought about the Maple Leafs

From the outside it may seem routine paperwork. But every movement counts within the front office of Maple Leafs. A salary difference of € 2500, a claim for temporary remission or a well-timed LTIR placement can shift the entire balance.

It is the hidden side of team building – not as glamorous as a goal, but just as important for what happens on the ice.
