Maple Leafs’ Dennis Hildeby looks back on first career shutout: ‘This is what I dreamed of’

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Dennis Hildeby recorded the first shutout of his NHL career, and that comes with a treasured souvenir.
Hildeby made 29 saves against the Tampa Bay Lightning to secure a crucial 2-0 win. The 24-year-old is playing a bigger role with the Maple Leafs and is the in reality starting goaltender with Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz both sidelined due to injury.

“At the end of the day, this is what I’ve been dreaming about since I started playing hockey, so you just have to remind yourself of that and have fun and just participate.” Hildeby said after the match.

Hildeby said his family is keeping track of the team’s results and he is very happy with his performance, as he should be. The 24-year-old is starting to make a big splash for the Maple Leafs, who are turning their season around through December. Hildeby now has a .936 save percentage this season, and he saved 2.04 goals above expectations in all situations in Monday’s win, via Natural statistical trick. This is what the Maple Leafs had in mind when Hildeby signed a three-year contract in September.

It is clear that Hildeby’s teammates are happy with his continued development throughout the year.

“It’s great to see Beast get his first shutout. He played great,” Maple Leafs forward John Tavares said.

“I’m really happy for him when the opportunity comes, you want to take it. Great to see him playing really well. We all have confidence in him. He’s a very calm, easy-going guy who is obviously very good in the net. We have to keep doing a good job for him, but he has performed phenomenally, coming in and giving us chances to win.”

“He’s very calm,” Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly said of Hildeby. “He works hard. He’s a routine guy, you learn that quickly. He’s got a nice demeanor, he’s very focused. He’s done a great job coming in, and we’re very happy for him tonight.”
