One of the more dramatic developments this week is the status of veteran forward David Kampf and the team’s desire to grant him unconditional waivers to terminate his contract. Kampf, suspended without pay after refusing to report to the AHL Toronto Marlies, will enter free agency on Friday.
Darren Dreger reports that once he is done and the contract is terminated, the list will be longer than expected for the player.
Apparently there is already great interest. The Montreal Canadiens, Pittsburgh Penguins, Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks are among the prime candidates. “The Canucks are struggling with injuries,” Dreger said. He also suggested the Penguins appear to have strong interest.
“These are teams that I think will at least check in on Friday to see if there’s a matchup.”
The Maple Leafs can finally put the Kampf situation behind them
This is probably not how the organization wanted things to end, and there was no update on the signing bonus situation, but it does appear that the organization and the player can finally move on. Once the contract is terminated, no more money is owed to the player and he is no longer on the books in terms of the salary cap.
This is one of those “right move, wrong path to get there” moments. Kampf will land somewhere soon. The Leafs now need to plug holes while Auston Matthews heals.
