Maple Leafs activate Joseph Woll from IR and assign Artur Akhtyamov to Toronto Marlies
“Great to have him back. He was playing extremely well before the injury,” Berube said of Woll.
“It’s nice that Dennis came in and played well,” Berube said. “We have confidence in him. We have confidence in both goalkeepers and we will rotate them a bit more.”
Woll has posted a 4-3-1 record this season with a .928 save percentage and a 2.44 goals against average. He is the clear No. 1 for the Maple Leafs, while Stolarz is sidelined indefinitely.
Woll also gave high praise to Akhtyamov, who made his first NHL appearance replacing Hildeby in Saturday’s loss to the Edmonton Oilers.
“From the first time I saw him, I thought he was sick,” Woll said of Achtyamov. “He’s a good goalkeeper, man, just look at him. The Russians feed their boys something different. He’s been a great, super relaxed guy, always smiling.”
Woll and Hildeby are now rotating for the Maple Leafs, with the latter proving he is ready for the NHL at this stage of his development. Toronto’s goaltending was a major strength last year, on its way to finishing first in the Atlantic Division during the regular season. With the Maple Leafs looking to break a two-game losing streak, Woll’s return may be imperative.
