For some, Manchester United should never have had the window of the summer transfer closed without securing that “dynamic midfielder”. Looking at the midfield of United, some admit that there are striking weaknesses that must be determined.

A movement for a dynamic option such as Carlos Baleba was logical, but with the deal that turned out to be expensive, United chose not to push ahead, causing their interest in signing a midfielder to cool.

Without additions in midfield, head coach Ruben Amorim is now forced to work with what he has.

Amorim has turned to Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes as his go-to-middenveld spivot. Although the link has been functional, it has not been seamless.

Casemiro, who does not get a young person, is struggling to cover the soil as it once did, so that the engine room sometimes exposes.

The perfect Fernandes partner

Fernandes, whose sparkle makes him an automatic starter, can thrive with another partner.

Amorim could turn to Kobbie Mainoo next to Fernandes, but he was clearly not sold to that link.

For the Portuguese tacticus, Mainoo and Fernandes compete for the same role in his system, which means that they cannot play together.

What about combining United’s number eight with Manuel Ugarte? Once seen as the ultimate solution for the misery of United’s midfield, Ugarte is now struggling to justify that tag. His versions have asked serious questions this season.

In the Premier League Summer Series, his dominant representation against West Ham had many tilting for a Breakout 2025-26 campaign after a lukewarm debut season.

Yet things did not go as planned. Three performances in, he still has to leave an impact.

Ugarte has looked out of the pace that even the veteran Casemiro seems the better option, despite the fact that he was the intended to replace after completing that £ 50 million transfer from Parc des Princes to Old Trafford.

Can Ugarte still break into this united side and partner Fernandes?

It is a question that many United fans cannot answer, especially what they have seen so far from the 24-year-old.

Fortunately, speaking with the media at home in Uruguay, the ex-PSG-Man offered an honest reflection on the start of him and United of the season.

“We didn’t start the season so well,” Ugarte said The observer. “My level was not the best either. We must be realistic and honest.

“But I am confident, I have a very good relationship with the coach. I work well and I am very excited and I am enthusiastic to earn a starting spot.”

United fans will appreciate his honesty and self-consciousness that he has to increase his play. If he supports it with hard work on the training pitch, there should still be hope.

They say that trust is the ultimate medicine and winning is the dealer. With the South American who sounds determined to prove himself in the Theater of Dreams, this desire can feed a change in his united fortunes.

Perfect turning point

That said, Ugarte made those comments during the international service and spoke for the qualifications of Uruguay’s World Cup against Peru (September 5) and Chile (September 10).

United fans will hope he will play a key role and impress those games. If he does, these luminaires could mark the turning point in a 2025–26 campaign that, due to his own recognition, did not start well.
