Manchester United were busy during the summer transfer window, investing more than £200 million in new signings. The Red Devils focused their initial efforts on strengthening the attack after a disappointing time in front of goal last season.
The Premier League giants scored just 44 goals in 38 league games and finished in 15th place.
INEOS signed Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko to give Ruben Amorim a renewed frontline that combines Premier League experience with youthful exuberance.
United also signed Senne Lammens on deadline day, giving the Portuguese head coach another option between the sticks. A new midfielder was also reportedly on the agenda, but the Red Devils ended the period without reinforcements in that area.
It now appears the English giants are ready to revise their plans at the turn of the year.
United want a new midfielder in January
Speak with TBR Footballjournalist Graeme Bailey stated that United are looking to sign a new midfielder and a right wing-back in January.
“They have plans and are working according to that structure. They are still looking for a central midfielder and assume that Amorim will be supported to build the team he wants. Of course things can always change, but at the moment that is the direction they are moving in,” said Bailey.
“They also look at the defense, a right back is, I am told, on their radar. They look centrally at what is needed.”
“So, do that [Harry] Maguire, [Luke] Shaw, [Lisandro] Does Martinez have a long-term future? That’s something they need to assess, and so central defense could be an area that needs someone.”
Maguire’s contract with Theater of Dreams expires at the end of the season, but a recent report from The Peoples Person suggests he is already in talks over a new deal.
The midfield is the weak link
After the first eight games of the season, the midfield is perhaps the weak link in Amorim’s selection. United have lost four games and won just three in all competitions so far.
The Portuguese head coach has stationed Bruno Fernandes in midfield this season, pairing him with Casemiro in most matches. However, the Brazilian no longer has the legs to dictate the game and that is why the Red Devils were keen to sign a defensive midfielder this summer.
Meanwhile, Amad has performed well as a right wing-back, but he is a natural attacker. Diogo Dalot is also an option for the position, but he still needs to convince. As such, it’s understandable why Amorim would want to bring in a new face for the role.
However, plans to sign a new centre-back will likely depend on the fitness of Lisandro Martinez. The Argentine is currently recovering from an ACL injury but is expected to return to action by the end of the month.
