Manchester United gives Amorim ‘three years’ to succeed

According to club co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Ruben Amorim should be given three years to succeed at Manchester United.

Amorim has had a tough time since replacing Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford in November 2024. He has achieved a win percentage of just 40% in his 50 games in all competitions, a figure that drops to just 29.41% when considering only Premier League matches.

United finished 15th in the Premier League last season, the club’s lowest finish since its last relegation in 1974. He is also under increasing pressure to tweak his 3-4-2-1 formation, which has failed to produce consistent results so far.

Despite these issues, Ratcliffe has insisted that Amorim needs time to bring success to the club. The 40-year-old won two Portuguese titles with former club Sporting Lisbon and Ratcliffe has said that ‘overnight success’ is not realistic.

Speaking to the Times’ The Business podcast, Ratcliffe said: “He hasn’t had the best seasons.

“Ruben has to show for three years that he is a great coach. That’s where I would be. The press, I don’t understand it sometimes.”

“They want overnight success. They think it’s a light switch. You know, you flip a switch and tomorrow it’s all roses.”

“You can’t run a club like Manchester United based on knee-jerk reactions to a journalist who calls one every week.”
