Officers from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) shot and killed a man with a knife at a Brooklyn hospital on Thursday.

According to police, the incident happened at NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital around 5:30 p.m.

Officers responded to a report of a man armed with a sharp object at the hospital, located in Brooklyn’s Park Slope neighborhood. The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was shot by the NYPD.

According to 911 calls, the suspect had barricaded himself in a room with other people. The suspect had injured himself and also tried to harm others, police said at a press conference on Thursday.

Hospital staff told officers that they had also received death threats from the suspect, according to police.

Upon arrival on the eighth floor of the hospital, police verbally ordered the suspect to leave the room and drop the weapon.

The suspect tried to close the door of the room several times, the police announced at the press conference on Thursday. The suspect, who was hospitalized on Wednesday, then approached the officers with a weapon and they deployed a Taser, but that did not help.

There continued to be verbal communication between the officers and the armed suspect, who again approached the officers with a knife in his hand.

After unsuccessfully deploying their Tasers for a second time, police opened fire on the suspect, who was pronounced dead minutes later, according to the NYPD.

The weapon was recovered at the scene. Police do not know how the man obtained the weapon.

Hospital spokespeople declined to comment and referred questions to police.
