Man United want to negotiate a deal after Sesko’s injury

Man United manager Ruben Amorim says the club will look to delay the departure of Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo to AFCON after Benjamin Sesko was struck by injury.

Sesko will miss Monday’s Premier League match against Everton at Old Trafford and will be out of action for three weeks due to a knee injury he suffered against Tottenham Hotspur before the international break.

The Red Devils could be extremely short of attacking options next month if three of their players leave to play in the African Cup of Nations.

Mbeumo, Amad and Noussair Mazraoui will leave for Africa on December 7 and could be away for up to seven weeks depending on how their respective national teams perform at the tournament.

According to Amorim, Sesko is expected to recover from his injury “more or less at the same time” if Mbeumo and Amad leave. “I don’t want to say for sure, but when they go to camp, I expect to have Ben back.”

United are hopeful they can strike a deal with Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Moroccan football associations to delay the trio’s release.

“We have the rules when we have to release the players. We’ll try to have the players a little longer, but we’ll see.”

“I think it’s two weeks before the start [of the tournament on 21 December]. We are going to try to arrange something with the federation.”

Meanwhile, Lisandro Martinez returns to fitness after a long absence with a knee injury. When asked if the centre-back could play as a midfielder, Amorim replied: “I can think that a smart, intelligent footballer can play in many positions, but this is not the position for him. In case of need he can play.”

“I feel like Licha can almost play. We have to be careful. He is clearly in a better position.”

The United boss was also asked whether Luke Shaw could play as a left wing-back, rather than as one of the three centre-backs. “He can play there, it’s the load a player does in that position, it’s a bit different. He’s more willing to do that. He’s a smart player,” he replied.
