Manchester United could stare at a major Joshua Zirkzee dilemma that threatens to get out of hand, unless it is tackled quickly.

Zirkzee Rise at United

Life at United started on a challenging note for Zirkzee after his move from Bologna. He had an immediate impact with a debut winner against Fulham, but what promised to be a clear start, unraveled quickly as his form refused.

As with many players who arrived from overseas competitions, Zirkzee was confronted with a heavy adjustment period in England. The struggles of United have not facilitated the transition and together with Rasmus Hojlund (now on loan in Napoli) he unfairly became a figure of criticism among certain fans and parts of the media.

Zirkzee became the soil in the December clash against Newcastle, where it was withdrawn after just three minutes. While he walked angry from the home crowd, he was almost reduced to tears – a face that would have soften his fiercest opponents.

Later it turned out that Bruno Fernandes – who was suspended for the game and looking from the stands – to the dressing room to comfort Zirkzee and to return him to the couch. The striker eventually ran on the call of his captain.

In January there were rumors about an exit from Zirkzee, with the strongest interest in him from Italy. The Dutchman could easily have thrown into the towel and returned to the familiar environment, but he did the opposite. A real characteristic of his character, he chose to stay and fight for his place in the team.

Zirkzee’s perseverance eventually bore fruit when he settled as a key figure under Ruben Amorim, who often preferred him to the overwhelming Hojlund. Sometimes operating in one of the two number 10 positions, he came to life and offered a glimpse of the talent that United had persuaded to secure his signature.

Zirkzee quickly won the United Faithful with its silky footwork, sharp accents, vision and fresh. His interest was later underlined in the 2024/25 season when an injury put him offside for weeks. It is difficult not to wonder if the Europa League -final with Tottenham Hotspur might have turned out to be different if it had been available at full force.

However, Zirkzee has difficulty continuing the momentum from the end of last season. Another setback of the injuries put him offside for the preseason and the start of the current campaign.

United’s Summer Rebuild learned on firepower, where the club brought in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and striker Benjamin Sesko. The trio is put directly into the starting XI, so that a big question is left: what for Zirkzee?

The Zirkzee -Dilemma of United

The last-minute departure of Hojlund could have hinted on a simpler path for Zirkzee, but the reality has so far painted a completely different story.

Amorim currently seems to be using Cunha and Mbeumo as his starting Twin dozens. The couple has developed good chemistry and were the most dangerous players of United, at least until Cunha sustained an injury. Amorim’s insistence on the use of Cunha and Mbeumo has even relegated Fernandes to a deeper role. A report that is covered by the person of the peoples emphasized that Fernandes does not enjoy the hinge.

When changes are required in the role of number 10, Amorim generally opted for Mason Mount of Amad instead of Zirkzee.

When at Striker, Amorim seems to let himself work Sesko work, his praise in the media repeatedly since he became a member. In fact, Zirkzee is sent to the couch behind Sesko. This situation is made even more challenging in view of the limited schedule of United, with only weekly matches because of the absence of European football and an early exit from Carabao Cup.

Prior to the Saturday meeting of United with Brentford in the Gtech Community Stadium, Zirkzee made three performances for United in all competitions, with all as a replacement. With just 77 minutes on the field, Zirkzee’s chances of meaningful playing time seem slim unless something drastically shifts at Old Trafford.

At the moment there are no indications that the 24-year-old is dissatisfied. But if the situation persists, it can change, which may cause greater problems.

Rumors are already circulating that potential Vrijers Zirkzee follows on the winter transfer window. If opportunities under Amorim are limited, he could consider a movement, especially with the 2026 World Cup approaches.

If Zirkzee were to leave, United would lose a player with a rare skills and a series of attributes that are able to disturb opposition distribution. Amorim is therefore confronted with a delicate balance act between implementing its tactical ideas and managing the role of Zirkzee in the team.
