There are rumors going around that Kobbie Mainoo will again ask to leave Manchester United next winter transfer window.
Towards the end of the summer period, Mainoo requested a loan move.
The United midfield prodigy expected not to play a key role under Ruben Amorim and wanted to join a club where regular playing time was guaranteed.
With this being a FIFA World Cup year, the 20-year-old’s sole focus was on earning a place in Thomas Tuchel’s England Three Lions squad.
United blocked the loan request, insisting he had a key role to play. But that promise did not last.
From child prodigy to peripheral
Behind Bruno Fernandes in the pecking order, Mainoo battled for minutes.
Of the more than 900 minutes United have played this season, he has played just 207, a frustrating return for a player once hailed as the brightest talent to emerge from the academy.
From key figure to selection player: Mainoo may feel that his World Cup hopes are slipping away.
However, he can revive that dream if he pushes for a move in January.
Top clubs enthusiastic
There are already several top clubs circling around. Napoli are doing everything they can to reunite him with Scott McTominay and Rasmus Hojlund in Naples, while Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are closely monitoring the situation.
As speculation mounts around a possible winter exit, transfer guru Pete O’Rourke has dropped a bombshell.
INEOS already has the answer
While Mainoo dreams of a season-defining move in January, O’Rourke, via Football insiderreveals:
“Manchester United actually does not want to let Kobbie Mainoo leave.
“They blocked any transfer from Mainoo and I imagine they would do the same in January because United will probably be needed this season in case of injuries or anything else.
“They will be confident that they can keep them all, and I don’t think they will be willing to let such a talented player leave United when they probably need all their best players to help Ruben Amorim have a successful season.”
Difficult situation
Hopefully things will change. Hopefully Mainoo earns his place in Amorim’s lineup between now and the winter transfer window.
Because if he continues to warm the bench, United’s number 37 may have no choice but to call for a move.
INEOS may think they have already mapped out how to tackle the Mainoo situation this winter, but it won’t be as easy as they think.
Imagine United still blocking that move, leaving him stagnant on the bench; he will miss the World Cup.
Mainoo may never be the same after this.
