The injured, Dhananjay Biswas, has been admitted to a government hospital at Teliamura in Khowai. According to doctors, the 60-year-old man suffered injuries to his legs and body.
Dhananjoy’s son quoted witnesses as reporting that a wild elephant grabbed the victim with its trunk and knocked him to the ground. However, he was saved by the villagers, who raised a shout to chase the elephant away.
Teliamura and neighboring areas in Khowai have been hit by stampeding wild elephants that regularly raid villages and destroy crops and property. Several deaths have occurred in Khowai in recent years.
The migration of elephant herds from the dense forests in the Hathai Kotor (formerly Boromura) Hills and Longtarai Hills mainly takes place in the dry season in search of food. A project implementation is underway to create a safe elephant corridor that would reduce the entry of elephants into the villages, a forest department official said.
