Mainoo prefers abroad to a Premier League loan

Kobbie Mainoo would prefer a move abroad to a Premier League loan if the midfielder leaves Manchester United in January.

Mainoo has been linked with a move away from Manchester United after struggling for regular first-team football.

The 20-year-old asked to go out on loan this summer but saw an exit blocked by Ruben Amorim. Since then he has played just 183 minutes of Premier League football and has not started a league match this season.

A number of Premier League teams are monitoring his situation as Mainoo looks for a temporary move to revive his fortunes.

The midfielder has not given up hope of making the England squad for the World Cup, having been a prominent part of the team that reached the Euro 2024 final. He has not been capped for the Three Lions for 15 months.

Despite interest from England, Mainoo’s preference is for a loan outside the Premier League. Rumor has it that Napoli are keen.

According to The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitewell, a decision on Mainoo’s future is unlikely until after the Africa Cup of Nations. United have Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui at the tournament.

“I have a feeling a decision won’t be made until after AFCON,” Whitwell said Streford Paddock.

“United will see how that goes, although he may want to start earlier and get more minutes on a regular basis, it is ultimately the clubs decision. I expect that picture to become clearer later in January, after mid-January.”

“Napoli were interested in him last summer and I have a feeling he would be keen to go abroad if we could get a loan move.”
